Description:
Blue-and-white soup plate with an enamelled English coat of arms. The plate has a brown rim and is decorated in underglaze cobalt-blue in purely Chinese style with four flower bouquets tied with fans on the rim and further flower motifs and a diaper border round the well. To this decoration, which is complete in itself, a coat of arms has been added in the centre, in red and black enamels and gilding, supported on either side by a lion, inscribed with the French motto ‘LE BON TEMPS VIENDRA’ (the good times will come), and surmounted by a Viscount’s coronet which is repeated on the rim.

Comments:Harrison-Hall and Krahl 1994:The coat of arms belongs to Simon Harcourt, a prominent barrister, Member of Parliament, Attorney General and Lord Chancellor, and his third wife, Elizabeth Vernon. He was created Viscount in 1721 and married his third wife in 1724, not long before his death in 1727 (Howard, 1974, p. 170).
