Description:
Plate (soup). Coat of arms of Hanbury, “Or a Bend engrailed vert cotised sable”, with the Hanbury crest with Comyn in pretence. The Comyn coat in different ranges from “Argent three garbs gules to Gules three garbs within a double tressure flory or”. Made of enamelled and gilded porcelain. The service was made for John Hanbury, the famous Quaker Tobacconist, born 1700. In 1730 he married Anna, only daughter of Henry Osgood. In the family this service was known as Hanbury with Osgood in pretence, but the family of Osgood never registered any arms. Hylands, John Hanbury’s home, was built by Sir John Comyn, Chief Baron of the Exchequer about 1700.
