Period:Unknown Production date:2000-2005
Materials:silk, paper,
Technique:sewn, folded silk,
Subjects:bird
Dimensions:Length: 11 centimetres Width: 45 centimetres
Description:
Sample showing folded silk technique with bird design. The piece is constructed on a base of black fabric, backed with brown paper. The design is created using green silk ribbon, which is folded and sewn in individual pieces to create a textured surface. The design of two birds is constructed of finer folded pieces and black embroidered couch work. These birds are depicted facing each other. In the centre of the piece, a diamond and star motif is constructed by varying the folding pattern and alternating the ribbon colour. Small stitches of yellow and white thread are embroidered across the piece. Along the border of the piece and edges of the birds, the green ribbon is sewn onto a white fabric, some areas are left bare and the white cotton shows through creating a zigzag style edging. It appears that the tails of the birds are unfinished as backing paper can still be seen.
