Comments:The Mustard Seed Garden Painting Manual, named after an estate in Nanjing, was published in 1679 by its compiler Wang Gai. The print was taken from a later edition of part 1, which introduces landscape compositions after famous masters. It was printed using two or three printing blocks with varying tones of black ink. The image by Wang Gai shows a scholar in his studio. It bears the title of a painting by Shen Zhou (1427–1509), a leading scholar-painter of the Ming dynasty. Wang Gai may not have seen the original, but painted in what he considered to be Shen Zhou’s style.
