Comments:This print of a peasant who practised modern hygiene promotes an educational campaign organised by the Communists in rural areas. The couplet within the print promises the unnamed ‘hygiene model’ a long life like the Southern Mountain. The artist incorporated the style and motifs of traditional popular prints, such as paper cuts for window decorations, in order to celebrate a new hero.Luo Gongliu was first known as a woodcut artist before he became an oil painter and author of canonical images of the Chinese Communist revolution. In 1938 he went to Yan’an, the Communist power base in north-west China. The experience of making prints and living among a rural population in wartime had a profound impact on him.Published: Publication: Ginsberg (2008)
