Comments:Zwalf 1985This print, of similar quality to no. 333, of Avalokiteśvara, may have formed a triad with that and another Bodhisattva. With the image above and text below it represents the most developed form of print from Dunhuang. The same arrangement is found in Japanese narrative scrolls following Chinese models, e.g. ‘Kako Genzai Ingakyō’ (‘Sūtra’ of Cause and Effect) of the 8th century and still used for printed Buddhist and secular stories in the 16th and 17th centuries. Amitabha BuddhaAmito rulai xiang 阿彌陀如來像This woodblock print shows Buddha Amitabha seated on a lotus flower, with inscriptions either side. Buddha Amitabha resides in the Pure Land, also called the Western Paradise. By the power of his vows, he makes it possible to all who call upon his name to be reborn in his land. The print is in the shangtu xiawen format, which means ‘image above, text below’. The bottom part contains a prayer. The format was to become the dominant layout for illustrated books from the Song dynasty (960–1279) up until the 16th century.Five Dynasties, mid 10th centuryFrom Cave 17,Dunhuang, Gansu provinceWoodblock print, ink on paperAsia 1919,0101,0.232; Ch.
