Description:
‘Famille verte’ soup plate with a Dutch coat of arms. This soup plate is decorated in ‘famille verte’ enamels with a coat of arms within a roundel, divided into eight sections, containing on the left a sheaf of wheat and a horizontal crescent moon with two gold stars on a blue enamel ground, and on the right a naked mermaid on top of a castle, and a black cross decorated with five boars’ heads. The design is surrounded by the French motto ‘EN PEINE CROISSANT’ (“in difficulty growing”), the date ‘ANo 1702’ and a coronet on top with tasselled ribbons. The rim bears four sprays of Chinese flowers -chrysanthemum, lotus, peony and camellia and the base has an underglaze – blue ‘lingzhi’ (fungus) mark within a double ring.
IMG
Comments:Harrison-Hall and Krahl 1994:The arms have been identified as belonging to the Dutch family de Vassey, impaled quarterly. The rim decoration and the mark on the base are characteristic of early 18th-century export ware but it is very rare to find dated Chinese armorial ware of this period. Another soup plate with this coat of arms is in a private collection (Godden, 1979, pl. 124a).
