Comments:In the foreground the young Jesus is being baptised in a river by John (‘the Baptist’), a preacher who practised this form of baptism before it became a Christian custom. In the background the Spirit of God is descending in form of a dove. This plate is one of the earliest pieces illustrating a scene from the Bible as described in a verse of the New Testament, in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 3, verse 16, to which reference is made in a cartouche on the rim (abbreviated to ‘Mat. 3.16’):“And Jesus, when he was baptised, went up straightway out of thewater: and lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he sawthe Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting uponhim”.
