Description:
‘Famille rose’ plate showing a Western couple. The plate shows a couple seated on a terrace, enclosed in an ornamental rococo frame with a central medallion which serves a long-tailed bird as a swing. The gentleman is playing the oboe, while the lady is feeding the bird. The rim is exquisitely painted with four Chinese landscape vignettes in rose-pink, within a flower scroll of white enamel.

Comments:Harrison-Hall and Krahl 1994:The Western original for this scene has not yet been traced. The plate belongs to a rare type of early famille rose pieces painted in white enamel on the white porcelain ground, with details incised into the enamel, a technique known as ‘bianco sopra bianco’ (white-on-white) which evokes the effect of lacework. Other plates of this design are in the Costa collection, Lisbon, Portugal (Hervouet and Bruneau, 1986, no. 8.8), and in a private Brazilian collection (Veiga, 1989, pl. 131).
