Period:Unknown
Materials:stucco
Technique:painted
Subjects:bodhisattva
Dimensions:Height: 13.50 centimetres Width: 12 centimetres
Description:
Fragmentary stucco relief plaque showing a Bodhisattva. He is shown sitting in meditation pose on a high lotus throne, his right hand touching the ground, the left in his lap. This gesture is the bhumisparsha (“calling the earth to be his witness”) mudra. The Bodhisattva is seated before a two-layered mandorla and is easily recognisable as a Bodhisattva by the headdress he wears as well as his body jewellery. The object must have been painted brightly originally, but has been blackened by fire or smoke. The coarse fabric on the back seems to have been added for additional stabilisation when the object was found.
