Description:
Tear-shaped clay plaque with a representation of the Buddha in relief. He is shown seated cross-legged in front of a mandorla with flames. His hands are held in the Vitarka Mudra (“mudra of discussion”). The right hand is held in front of the shoulder, fingers pointing upward, palm facing outward. The left is held in the lap, fingers pointing downward. The plaque was moulded using very light-coloured clay and painted using red and black pigments. This is only one of a group of almost identical objects. For further objects see 1930,1021.4-1930,1021.6.
