Comments:Neolithic period, Chahai period, 4000BC-3500BC. This thin and carefully curved jade looks rather like an old-fashioned shoehorn. It is almost straight, but widens slightly towards the curved end. At the other end, which slopes and is unevenly finished, there is a hole drilled from both sides. The most distinctive feature of the piece is its curved cross-section which can be paralleled in implements from the Chahai site at Fuxin, Liaoning province. The function of such pieces is not known. However, the very complete and accomplished shape and surface suggest that jade carving was well advanced by the time this piece was made. It is likely there are earlier stages of this art yet to be discovered. See Rawson 1995, p.115, cat.no.1.1. The long, curved piece is rounded at one end which tapers gently towards a slanted irregularly finished end which has a conical perforation. Shang. Length 130mm.
