They ground imported cobalt and applied it in solution to the porcelain body before glazing and firing at a high-temperature. This cobalt fires unevenly but generates a deep blue colour. The design is controlled and shows a broad band of formal scrolling lotus flowers bordered by fruit sprays (plum, peach, lychee and pomegranate) around the shoulder, and individual flower sprays around the foot (chrysanthemum, peony, flowering pomegranate and rose).
