Comments:Published PDF date : Ming Xuande Room 95 label text:PDF 683Gaibo, covered jar with flowersThis 蓋缽 (gaibo ‘covered jar’) is another porcelain form invented in the Xuande era but it originates in Islamic metal work. Iranian metalworkers made brass vessels of this form inlaid with silver, copper and gold earlier in the fourteenth century (see Gallery 34). Craftsmen travelled freely to the Chinese court from Iran when it was part of the Mongol empire during the Yuan dynasty (AD1279–1368). The covered jar is painted around the body and cover with a Chinese design of composite flower scroll with lotus, peony, chrysanthemum, camellia and hibiscus. Archaeologists have unearthed vessels of this form at the imperial kilns at Jingdezhen from the Xuande strata with a range of different decorative schemes including copper-red glaze.
