Description:
Porcelain jar with underglaze blue decoration. This globular jar has a short neck with a dish mouth and recessed base. It is painted in underglaze blue outlines with a dream-like garden scene showing a man, probably an immortal, dressed in the fine clothes of an official, accompanied by a tiger and by a servant carrying books. Around the shoulder is a border of ‘ruyi’ heads and there are lozenges and dots around the neck.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Jars of this sort are quite common. For example, another such jar is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. For another in the British Museum see BM 1947.0712.193. This style of underglaze blue painting appears first in the late Wanli period. Interestingly wild parts of south-eastern Taihe in Jiangxi province were tiger-infested in the Ming era.
