Porcelain jar with underglaze blue ‘kraak’-type decoration. This heavily potted jar has flared sides, a flat shoulder, a raised neck with finger-sized mouth opening, an everted rim which is badly chipped and a broad base which is recessed and glazed. It is painted in ‘kraak’-style underglaze blue with four panels containing white deer standing in front of stylized rocks and with a border of ‘ruyi’ heads above. The glaze has misfired and is brown and heavily crazed.

Comments:See also 1934,0717.1 Harrison-Hall 2001:The pronunciation of the Chinese word for deer, 鹿 ‘lu’, is the same as for the word 禄 ‘lu’, meaning emolument; thus it is regarded as an auspicious symbol. Little jars of this type were exported both empty and filled with oils to customers in countries in South-east Asia. For example, a similar jar, collected in Indonesia, is in the Princessehof Museum, Leeuwarden.
