Period:Ming dynasty Production date:1522-1566
Materials:porcelain
Technique:glazed, painted, underglazed,
Subjects:flaming jewel dragon
Dimensions:Diameter: 10 centimetres (maximum) Height: 16 centimetres (with cover)
Description:
Four-sided porcelain jar and cover with overglaze red, green and yellow enamels. Although this jar has a square foot ring, neck and overhanging cover, its four sides bulge in the middle. Painted in a restricted palette of red, green and some yellow enamel are four sinewy five-clawed dragons with closed jaws shown prancing alternately on their hind and fore legs, chasing a single flaming pearl over waves among ‘ruyi’ clouds. Around the neck and at the join of the knob are bands of alternating red and green inverted triangles; ‘ruyi’ clouds decorate the shoulder and cover, while red and green lappets adorn the knob and foot. A double square frames a six-character underglaze blue Jiajing reign mark on the base.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Such jars are not uncommon. An identical covered jar is in the Palace Museum, Beijing.
