Description:
Jacket; part of woman’s wedding costume As.1998.1.140 to 142. Base cloth lined, with exterior of black silk satin, with sleeves of hand-spun, hand-woven cotton dyed dark blue, with cuffs dyed black. Elaborate sleeve decoration of a heavy rectangle which has been constructed separately and then sewn on. The rectangle is made of numerous bands of decoration, each different coloured (red, jade green and black). Each band is made up of a base cloth; silk satin stitching; silk felt motifs which as stuck on then stitched in dark thread; edging of two lines of beads and metal. The motifs are composed of a rich variety of diamonds, triangles, swastikas etc. On hem is a red strip of satin with floral satin stitch embroidery.
