Description:
Jacket; from man’s festival costume As.1998.1.263 to 264. Base cloth of hand-woven cotton dyed indigo to almost black with some sheen. No collar and short sleeves, overlap extension on right front. Decorated on cuff, front extension and bottom back, in blocks of horizontal and vertical pieces of different types of cloth applied to make band, placed together like patchwork. Cloth used is bought market cloth, red woven wool and local shiny black indigo-dyed cotton. Use of weft-patterned weave, floral motifs in satin stitch outlined in metal thread or strips of foil backed with paper, geometric motifs in satin or cross-stich, occasional use of silk felt, added sequins. Colours used include warm reds, black with soft greens and some white.

Comments:Text from Corrigan 2001: 49: rongjiang county, qiandongnan prefecture. Jacket. Collarless short-sleeved and short-waisted jacket, open at the front, with cuffs, front lapel and lower back panel embroidered and woven. The cloth is hand-woven cotton, indigo-dyed to almost black, with a sheen. The decorated areas are patchwork blocks of applied decorated material of different types. Various techniques and motifs are used, including supplementary weft patterned weave, floral motifs in satin stitch outlined with metal thread, geometric motifs in satin or cross stitch, and narrow pieces of applied cloth and ‘silk felt’.
