Description:
Ritual vessel, gu. Typologically typical of vessels of the late Shang period in Anyang, Henan. The vessel has four vertical, dented ribs on its foot and body. These are embellished with a mask motif in relief. The background decoration consists of square-shaped leiwen and yuwen patterns. A band of dragon-like creatures is used as ornament around the mouth of the vessel. The upper band on the vessel is decorated with four cicadas. Inscription of a single character inside the foot. Made of bronze.

Comments:Rawson 1992:The ‘Gu’ is a ritual vessel for wine with a curved profile constricted at the waist. One of the most ancient forms of ritual vessel, ceramic ‘gu’ were used from the Erlitou period. See BM 1990.0807.1.As a group, bronze ritual vessels would have created a striking visual effect. Golden in colour when first made, they would rapidly have turned black in the humid summer climate of north-central China.
