Cai Xiang, with the word Junmo, is a native of Xianyou (now Xianyou, Fujian) in Xinghua. In the eighth year of Tiansheng’s reign (1030), he was a 19 year old middle scholar and once served as prefect of Kaifeng, Fuzhou, Quanzhou, Hangzhou and other places. Yu Shinan and Yan Zhenqing learned calligraphy from Jin people, and were ranked among the “Four Scholars of the Northern Song Dynasty” together with Su Shi, Huang Tingjian and Mi Fu. He was famous in the calligraphy industry. Su Shi called him “the first in this dynasty because of his high talent, profound accumulation of knowledge, corresponding mind and endless metamorphosis.”
