Description:
‘Blanc de chine’ figure of a Bodhidharma with transparent glaze. This figure represents the legendary founder of Buddhism, Bodhidharma, seated on an oval dais with one knee raised and the other leg tucked beneath him. Bodhidharma is dressed in monastic robes and has one bare foot exposed. He is identified by his prominent curly eyebrows, whiskers and beard. As a Buddhist deity he has elongated earlobes and in addition wears hooped earrings. He is shown frowning with clean-shaven head and prominent front teeth; his nostrils and ears are pierced. The dais is scored with small lines, creating a feather pattern. The sculpture is hollow apart from the head, and the inside has been scraped roughly before glazing. The transparent glaze has a yellowish tinge typical of the late Ming period.
