Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Avalokiteshvara was worshipped in China from the Han dynasty, towards the end of the first century AD, and by the sixth century was worshipped in all Buddhist temples. Tang dynasty Guanyin are unquestionably male and Indian-influenced in appearance, but by the Song she had adapted a more feminine look. She was associated with fecundity and the title ‘Giver of Sons’ was added to her name. Naturally in China and Japan her popularity was thus enhanced. An almost identical unpublished figure is on display in the Nanjing Provincial Museum.
