Description:
This moulded porcelain figure depicts a man with a long black beard and side whiskers (one of which has broken off), wearing a black scholar’s hat and a green robe with cloud motif and a crane rank badge. He is seated with one knee raised on a hexagonal plinth ornamented at the front with a stylised chrysanthemum head on a diaper ground and at the back with a chime flanked by two flower heads. The figure may be identified as Cao Guojiu, one of the Eight Daoist Immortals. He is depicted as a musician who plays castanets which here he holds in his left hand. Originally this would have been one of a set of eight figures.
