Description:
Dehua ware porcelain figure of a Buddha seated crossed-legged, with hands in the ‘dhyana mudra’ (meditation). The figure has short curly hair, elongated ear lobes, an ‘urna’ (proturberance on the forehead) and an ‘ushnisha’ (proturbance on the top of the head). The figure has a white body.

Originally the figures were probably made as cheap alternatives to ivory carvings of deities also made in Fujian. Porcelains from Dehua were exported to Europe as evidenced by excavations, shipwrecks, shipping lists and inventories of possessions. They were also made for the domestic market. Figures of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, are quite common but images of the Buddha are comparatively rare.
