A figure of a Buddhist lama (monk), seated in teaching posture and identifiable as scholar Phyogs-las rnam-rgyal of Bodong. Made of bronze with silver and copper inlay. With three castings: the original head and torso and two additions or repairs below.

Comments:Zwalf 1985This imposing portrait figure with unappealing, if memorable, features is uninscribed but can be plausibly identified. Other, inscribed, bronzes, including one in the British Museum, with the same large jaw bear invocations to Phyogs-las rnam-rgyal of Bodong (1306-86), a celebrated scholar of the Jo-nang-pa philosophical school, who is credited with a large literary output and control of various monasteries. This image may have been produced soon after his death; that it was highly regarded is clear from its three castings, the original head and torso and two additions or repairs below.
