Description:
This moulded porcelain figure depicts an old man with a long beard, wearing a black scholar’s hat and dressed in a green robe decorated with white, yellow and aubergine clouds and with black shoes. He is sitting, with one knee raised, on a hexagonal plinth, ornamented at the front with a stylised 壽shou [longevity] character on a diaper ground and at the back with a chime flanked by two flower heads. The figure may be identified as Zhang Guolao, one of the Eight Daoist Immortals. He is depicted as a musician who uses two crutch shaped drum-sticks to beat a yu gu [cylindrical bamboo fish drum] which he holds in his left hand. There are traces of cold painted red on the edges of the base. Originally this would have been one of a set of eight figures.
