Description:
This pair of male and female porcelain lion-dogs or ‘dogs of fo’ are depicted standing on their hind legs and are painted in famille verte enamels. Both stand on stools draped with textiles. The female has the cub, climbing her front leg, and the male rests his paw on a stick which would have held a sliding ball in place (now missing). Their eyes are made on stalks so that they rattle in their heads and their mouths are open with ribbons clenched between their teeth. Originally they were made as items for a scholar’s desk and would have held tapers of burning incense to perfume the room in the tubes attached to their backs.
