Description:
This moulded porcelain figure depicts a smiling old man with a long beard and extended cranium. He is dressed in a green robe decorated with stylised 壽shou [longevity] characters. He is sitting, with one knee raised, on a hexagonal plinth, ornamented at the front with a stylised chrysanthemum head on a diaper ground and at the back with a chime flanked by two flower heads. The figure may possibly be Shoulao the god of longevity, although Franks identified him as Zhang Guolao, one of the Eight Daoist Immortals, generally depicted as a musician who uses two crutch shaped drum-sticks to beat a yu gu [cylindrical bamboo fish drum] which he holds in his right hand.
