Description:
This heavily-potted and coarsely-modelled famille verte porcelain sculpture is a representation of the Chinese god of longevity, Shoulao, seated on a rock. He is identified by his long beard, extended cranium and elongated earlobes – symbolising wisdom. Details such as his facial expression are incised into the clay. Between his feet is the head of a deer which is another emblem of immortality. His sleeve and right hand are broken. The sculpture is unglazed inside.
