- Description:
The full text of the Filial Piety Sutra consists of 18 chapters. It is said that Zengzi (505-435 BC) asked Confucius about filial piety and was recorded by Zengzi’s students. People from all walks of life are divided into five levels, from the head of state to the common people, marking the principles and ways of practicing filial piety. This painting is selected from the first part of the Book of Filial Piety in Song Dynasty. It depicts Confucius giving lectures in the middle and Zeng Zi kneeling to ask filial piety. It is speculated that it was originally a long scroll with pictures and texts connected, but later it was converted into a separate album form of calligraphy and painting due to damage. The whole volume is accompanied by pictures and texts, and the paintings use different scenes to interpret the double meanings of filial piety and loyalty of people from all walks of life, fully highlighting the original intention of “making a speech for the monarch”. The style of this volume is slightly similar to that of the Emperor Gaozong, and it should be written by the calligrapher of the Imperial Academy. The style of the painting is different from that of Ma He, which was actually created by Song people.
