Description:
This moulded porcelain figure depicts an old man with a long beard, wearing a black scholar’s hat and dressed in a green robe decorated with lotus flowers in white and yellow with black shoes. He is sitting, with one knee raised, on a hexagonal plinth, ornamented at the front with a stylised chrysanthemum head on a diaper ground and at the back with a chime flanked by two flower heads . The figure may be identified as Zhang Guolao, one of the Eight Daoist Immortals. He is depicted as a musician who uses two crutch shaped drum-sticks to beat a yu gu [cylindrical bamboo fish drum] which he holds in his left hand. There are traces of cold painted red on the edges of the base, sleeves and belt but much of this has worn away. Originally this would have been one of a set of eight figures.
