Comments:There is a list of descriptions of the subjects inserted in the front of the album. This drawing is described as: “N.o 23 A Soldier in a common dress. The Chinese are so much attach’d to old customs, that they use this rude instrument, the Matchlock with a rest, in preference to an English musket, which people of their ingenuity might easily copy from ours & of which they must tacitly acknowledge the superiority, a great part if the Chinese army wear the point of the sabre forwards, which they draw from behind very adroitly, the upper part of the helmet is of iron, & the box worn in front with a face painted on it, contains ammunition &c -“For further information about the album, see comment for 1865,0520.193.
