Comments:There is a list of descriptions of the subjects inserted in the front of the album. This drawing is described as: “39 Figures equipped for a Shower, one of them has a hood of red cloth, which is commonly worn at this time, & the blue umbrella, tho’ used by one of the figures, is more frequently us’d by people keeping fruit stalls &c- ” The group of the man with the child on his back sheltering under an umbrella is very similar to that in Plate 30 (aquatint) of “The Costume of China” (published 1805; etched lettering below the image: “W. Alexander fec.t” and “London Publish’d Aug.t 13 1801, by G & W. Nicol Pallmall”), though the shape and positioning of the umbrella is different. This makes “The Costume of China” plate a conflation of this drawing and 1865,0520.225.For further information about the album, see comment for 1865,0520.193.
