Comments:There is a list of descriptions of the subjects inserted in the front of the album. This drawing is described as: “34 A Mandarins Wife & her Servant. Vide the Costume of China, Ditto -” Plate 14 (aquatint) of “The Costume of China” (published 1805; etched lettering below the image: “W. Alexander fecit” and “London Publish’d Sep.t 1.st 1798, by G Nicol Pallmall”) depicts these two figures with the addition of one another, the son of the lady who holds his wrist. The colouring of the women’s clothing differs in the aquatint, and there are minor variations in their hairstyles. This watercolour is related to 1865,0520.222 which Alexander appears to have also drawn on for Plate 14 of “The Costume of China”.For further information about the album, see comment for 1865,0520.193.
