Comments:There is a list of descriptions of the subjects inserted in the front of the album. This drawing is listed as: “17 A Peasants Wife of China, with a basket of oranges & her pipe, smoking being in use by both males & females, old & young.”Alexander again noticed the prevalency of smoking amongst the Chinese of both sexes and all ages in the textual accompaniment to the second plate of “The Costume of China” (published 1805; etched lettering below the image: “W Alexander. fecit.” and “London Publish’d July 20 1797, by G Nicol, Pall mall”), which shows a peasant with his family; the wife is smoking. For further information about the album, see comment for 1865,0520.193.
