Comments:There is a list of descriptions of the subjects inserted in the front of the album. This drawing is described as: “56 A small temple or Joss house, with a Chinese prostrating, Vide the Costume of China.” Plate 36 (aquatint) of “The Costume of China” (published 1805; etched lettering under image: “W Alexander fecit” and “London. Published Oct.r 1.st 1803 by W. Miller Old Bond Street”), show a larger and more finished version of the small temple in the BM watercolour, set within a different landscape. The only figure in “The Costume of China” image is that of a Chinese man sat with legs crossed on the ground in front of the temple, gazing directly at the viewer. For further information about the album, see comment for 1865,0520.193.
