Comments:The decoration on this unusual, large serving dish was designed to resemble a Chinese landscape painting brushed with ink. The irregular, undulating border around the landscape has the effect of distancing the scene within from one of everyday life. The composition of the painting is in classic Song period style. Reading from right to left, it shows three different perspectives – near, middle and far. It even has a painter’s seal to the left of the scene as if it were a real painting. (N. C. Rousmaniere, 2015)
