Description:
Porcelain dish with underglaze blue decoration. This shallow dish has rounded sides and an everted rim and stands on a tapering foot ring. Two flying phoenix are portrayed on a scrolling lotus ground inside a double-ring medallion and around the outside. A classic scroll decorates the inner rim and single blue lines emphasize the outer rim, join of foot to body and foot. The slightly convex base is marked with a six-character Xuande reign mark in a double ring and has a Y-shaped hairline crack.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:This motif is much less frequently seen than the dragon-and-cloud design found on similar dishes of the Xuande era. A dish with rounded sides, a Xuande mark and an identical design of phoenix is in the National Palace Museum, Taipei. An unmarked dish of this design is in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Another is in the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, London.
