Square porcelain dish with raised slip decoration and monochrome turquoise glaze. A pair of geese among reeds is outlined in slip inside this square dish with indented corners. It is covered in a monochrome turquoise overglaze which is somewhat degraded, possibly as a result of burial. On the flat base, areas of glaze have chipped off and are infilled with a crystallized green pigment. The upper edges of the rim are ground down.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Monochrome turquoise glazes were first used at Jingdezhen on porcelain in the Yuan dynasty. A round box containing an ink slab with a turquoise glaze and gilding was excavated from the Yuan remains at Doufulong. Square dishes of this type with indented corners were popular during the Jiajing reign, but are also known in the Longqing era (see BM 1947.0712.219). The goose and gander are a common motif in the middle Ming era, being a symbol of marital bliss.
