Description:
Porcelain dish painted in underglaze blue and overglaze enamels. This dish has rounded sides and a low tapering gritty foot. A man shouldering a bundle of bamboo is depicted in underglaze blue, standing on a cloud, with waves and flowers painted in green, black and red enamels. Outside, issuing from the rim, are two branches with round red fruit. In the centre of the chatter-marked base is a four-character Tianqi reign mark, written in spindly kaishu characters.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Such hastily executed designs are characteristic of the Tianqi period porcelains exported to Japan, where they were known as ‘Tenkei-aka-e’ [literally, red-painted Tianqi wares]. Dishes with similar blue decoration and varying enamel work are quite common. Examples are in the Butler Collection and in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
