Comments:Published PDF date : Ming late 15th century Room 95 label text:PDF A501 Saucer-dish with blue glazeThis saucer-dish is covered inside and around the outer walls with a deep blue, high-fired, cobalt-pigmented glaze. The glaze has shrunk away slightly from the rim revealing a pure white porcelain body. The dish is incised on the base with a six-character Xuande reign mark in a double ring beneath a transparent glaze. Single-colour high-fired blue glazes were first used in the Yuan dynasty (see case 53). Archaeologists have excavated similar dishes at the site of the imperial kilns at Jingdezhen. These were rejected and broken by the potters if they failed to meet the high standards demanded.
