Description:
Square porcelain dish with underglaze blue and overglaze polychrome enamels in ‘wucai’ style. Alongside traditional forms, a whole new range of innovative shapes was introduced in the Jiajing era, including this type of square dish. Although it is quite shallow, a sense of extra depth is created by the out-turned rim and in-turned foot. During the firing its base has sagged somewhat. Blue areas such as the rocks were painted in cobalt under the glaze and fired, then coloured enamels were added during the second firing. In the centre is a Tai Hu rock with red tree peonies, flying insects and butterflies with, in the cavetto, opposing pairs of red and of blue prancing dragons in cartouches with diaper ground and morning glory flower heads at the corners. Outside depictions of peonies, rocks and insects alternate with spiky flowers and insects with ‘lingzhi’ at the corners. The base carries a six-character Jiajing reign mark in underglaze blue.
