Description:
Octagonal porcelain dish with underglaze blue decoration. This shallow dish has eight gently faceted sides and an octagonal upturned flat rim. Its low foot is covered with grit from the kiln. In the centre it is decorated in underglaze blue with a white hare, seated on its haunches, on a grassy knoll looking up at the branches of a pine tree. Radiating from this central medallion are eight panels, each containing one of the Eight Trigrams from the ‘Yi Jing’ [Book of Changes] and a band of spirals around the rim. Outside are four ‘lingzhi’ sprays and on the base a sketchy six-character Chenghua mark.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Magic ‘lingzhi’ fungus, the immortal white hare and the Eight Trigrams are all familiar emblems of longevity and good luck with Daoist associations.
