This painting was written by Lin Chun. Some of the huge stones at the water’s edge are horizontal, some are vertical, and they hang upside down. There are also green bamboos and wild flowers. Among the loose rocks, magpies jump up and down and sing, forming a lively picture. Ten “magpies” represent the perfect way to report the happy event. This is the concept of auspiciousness inherited from ancient times. Lin Chun is from Qiantang, Zhejiang Province. In the Southern Song Dynasty, during the reign of Emperor Xiaozong Chunxi (1174-1189 AD), he served as a painter waiting for the imperial edict and was good at painting flowers, birds, melons and fruits.
