Su Hanchen was one of the most outstanding genre painters in the Song Dynasty. Many of the extant “The Painting of the Merchant” were claimed to have been painted by him, but most of them were works of the Ming Dynasty. These merchants in the Ming Dynasty usually wear gorgeous clothes, which is not a true portrayal of the merchants in life, but a festival activity in the palace with a performance nature.
