Description:
Porcelain stem cup with anhua moulded and red glaze decoration. This stem cup has a rounded bowl with everted rim and a broad spreading stem. Inside it is decorated with an anhua moulded design of two dragons chasing their flaming pearls among ruyi clouds in the cavetto. Outside on a monochrome white ground it is painted with copper red glaze rather than in underglaze red pigment. There are three evenly spaced large fruits: a pomegranate, peach and persimmon. The interior of the hollow foot is glazed.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:An identical stem cup with a six-character Xuande reign mark inside was excavated at the imperial factory at Zhushan in March 1993. Examples of this form of stem cup but with iron-brown glaze have been excavated at Jingdezhen, though these are likely to have been experimental pieces as no other examples are known. Another example of the underglaze red variety with a Xuande reign mark is in the National Palace Museum, Taipei. The three fruits are auspicious symbols. Peaches represent longevity and pomegranates the birth of many sons. Persimmons are an emblem of joy because of their red colour and are also a rebus for the word ‘affairs’. Together therefore the three fruits convey the message: ‘May you have long life and many sons’.
