In ancient times, when painting fish, folk painters often expressed the auspicious sign of “surplus”. Scholars often took the free meaning of Zhuangzi’s “knowing fish well”. This picture shows a group of fish swimming in the water with different postures. It is only stained with myrrh without drawing. The ink rhyme is moist and the body is beautiful, showing the texture of fish and algae in the water. This painting is not printed by the author, but the inscription and postscript at the end of the volume all say that it was written by Fan Anren, a famous fish painter in the Song Dynasty.
