As the light catches it, the glaze has a slight iridescence like oil in water. This cup was part of a collection of single-coloured porcelains given by Mountstuart Elphinstone (AD 1871–1957) just before the opening of the Percival David Foundation in 53 Gordon Square, London, in 1952. Like David, Elphinstone was a noted collector and member of the Oriental Ceramic Society. Indeed, he once owned one of the ‘David Vases’.
