This picture depicts the story of Laozi’s exit. It is said that Laozi decided to leave Hangu Pass in the west because he felt the decline of the Zhou Dynasty. At that time, Yin Xi, who was guarding the pass, found a purple cloud in the east, and speculated that a saint would come. Soon, Lao Tzu, who was riding a cow, appeared. At Yin Xi’s request, Lao Tzu wrote down the Tao Te Ching before leaving.
